Smart & Simple Tips for Packing Up Your Home

Moving home is exciting, but packing can feel a bit overwhelming. With some planning and nifty tricks, though, you can make the process much easier — and even a little fun. Here are some of the best tips we’ve found (and used) to help make your move go well.

1. Get Organised Before You Start

  • Create a Packing Timeline
Don’t leave everything until the week before. Decide what can be boxed up early (off-season clothes, books, décor) and what you’ll need up to the last minute.
  • Gather Your Supplies
Get good quality boxes in different sizes, packing tape, bubble wrap or packing paper, markers, and labels. Having everything ready means less last-minute panic.
  • Use a Colour-Coding System
Assign each room a colour (e.g. blue for the kitchen, green for the bedroom). Mark each box with its room colour and a short description of its contents. It makes unpacking so much simpler.

2. Smart Packing Hacks to Save Time, Space & Headaches

  • Use Garment Bags or Trash Bags for Clothes on Hangers
Skip removing clothes from hangers by covering them in a large trash bag or using a garment bag. Saves ironing (mostly) and keeps things ready to hang.
  • Fill Big Spaces with Smaller Items
Pop pots, pans, spices etc. into large appliances. Wrap fragile or glass objects well, but use the space you have wisely.
  • Vacuum Sealed Bags Are A Game Changer
These are great for bedding, pillows, blankets. They save space in the moving van and make stacking easier.
  • Protect Furniture Smartly
Use stretch wrap (pallet wrap) to protect drawers, smooth surfaces, and awkward bits on furniture. It helps avoid scratches and keeps things in place during transit.
  • Supplies on the Go
Make a “moving caddy” with tape, scissors, markers, box cutter etc., so you're not hunting for tools every time you start a new box.

3. What to Pack Last, What to Keep Handy

  • “Day One” Box
Pack a box or bag with essentials you’ll need right away: kettle, mugs, toilet roll, basic toiletries, chargers, change of clothes etc. Having this ready will make your first night in your new place more comfortable.
  • Label Each Box Clearly
Put what’s inside and which room it goes to — ideally on three sides of the box. Makes unloading and organising so much faster.
  • Tape Up Lose Parts
Use sandwich bags or small sealed bags to keep screws, bolts, handles, and other small parts. Tape them to the furniture they belong to so you don’t lose anything.

4. Keep Your Cool — Tips for Stress-Free Packing

  • Pace Yourself
Break packing into manageable chunks. Don’t try doing the whole house in a couple of days unless you absolutely have to.
  • Involve Others
Friends, family, or even professional packers can help. More hands make lighter work.
  • Take Care of Yourself
Stay hydrated, take breaks, and rest. Packing and moving are physical work — your body will thank you.

Why These Tips Make a Difference

Putting in the effort to pack well:

  • Saves time when you arrive in your new home (less scrambling to find things).
  • Reduces risk of damage to your belongings.
  • Helps you feel less stressed and more in control.
